Wochema Washing Station operates under the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU), which is an organization established in 2002 in an effort to establish stability amid an unstable coffee market in Ethiopia. It represents tens of thousands of smallholder coffee farmers within six districts of Ethiopia: Yirgacheffe, Gedeb, Wanago, Dilla Zuria, Bule, and Kochere.
The average coffee farmer in Ethiopia owns less than 1 hectare of land. Coffee is delivered to the washing station in cherry form, sorted and processed in day lots.
YCFCU is a Fair Trade– and organic-certified cooperative, which is somewhat unusual among coffee producing in Ethiopia. The YCFCU is also exempt from the national requirements of tendering coffee through the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) because of its status as a democratic cooperative. (via CafeImports)
